Methyl salicylate 500g
White beeswax 250g
Hydrous wool fat 250g

Question:
A salicylic acid ointment base contains 12% w/w of salicylic acid and a water emulsifying base. What mass of ointment base is needed to prepare 200g of ointment?
Solution:
12%w/w is 12g salicylic acid in 100g of ointment therefore the amount of ointment used is 100-12 = 88. Therefore in 200g it is 88 X 2 = 176
Question:
Calulate the dose of active ingredient a patient receives on each occasion and each day?
Sudafed Elixir 150ml
3ml TDS
Solution:
Use MIMs to get the dosage of 30mg/5ml
Xmg/3ml
Cross multiply and X = 18mg/3ml per dose
And per day multiply by 3 to get 54mg

Solution:
Have Want
2.5g in 100ml 100mg / 5ml
2500mg in Xml
100mg in 5ml
X = 125ml
Question:
If 37.5g od Digoxin is used to manufacture 150 000 tablets, what is the dose in µg of each tablet?
Solution:
37.5g makes 150 000 tablets
37.5X10^6 make 150 000 tablets
X makes 1 tablet
X = 250µg
Question:
Express 0.05% w/v Fluoride as parts per million (ppm)
Solution:
Ppm is 1g in 1000 000mls
0.05g in 1000ml
X in 1000 000ml
X = 500 ppm
Question:
If 50ml of a 1: 20 (w/v) solution of Aluminium Acetate is diluted to 1000ml, what is the percentage strength?
Solution:
Have Want
1g in 20ml 2.5g in 100ml
X in 50ml X in 100ml
X = 2.5g X = 0.25%
