Master formula:<br />Morphine powder: 100g<br />Brilliant blue dye: 40ml<br />Aqua chloroform conc: 625ml<br />Hydroxybenzoate pres. Sol.: 150ml<br />Water to: 25L<br />How much of each ingredient would you use to prepare 750ml of the solution? <br />Solution:<br />Divide 750ml by 25000ml to get a factor of 0.03.<br />Take all items and multiply be 0.03<br />Morphine powder: 3g<br />Brilliant blue dye: 1.2ml<br />Aqua chloroform conc: 18.75ml<br />Hydroxybenzoate pres. Sol.: 4.5ml<br />Water to: 750ml <br />Question:<br />The supplier of methyl salicylate ointment is out of stock of the ointment. You are asked to make 35g of the ointment for Mrs Xuba. Calculate the quantities of each ingredient required. Master formula:<br />Methyl salicylate 500g<br />White beeswax 250g<br />Hydrous wool fat 250g<br />Solution:<br />Add all quantities together, you get a total of 1000g. Divide 35g by 1000g to get a factor of 0.035. Multiply all quantities by 0.035<br />Question:<br />A salicylic acid ointment base contains 12% w/w of salicylic acid and a water emulsifying base. What mass of ointment base is needed to prepare 200g of ointment?<br />Solution:<br />12%w/w is 12g salicylic acid in 100g of ointment therefore the amount of ointment used is 100-12 = 88. Therefore in 200g it is 88 X 2 = 176 <br />Question:<br />Calulate the dose of active ingredient a patient receives on each occasion and each day?<br />Sudafed Elixir 150ml<br />3ml TDS<br />Solution:<br />Use MIMs to get the dosage of 30mg/5ml<br /> Xmg/3ml<br />Cross multiply and X = 18mg/3ml per dose<br />And per day multiply by 3 to get 54mg<br />Question:<br />You are asked to reconstitute a bottle of ampicillin to create a suspension that contains 100mg/5ml ampicillin.
